Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand innovation in SMEs by focusing on the gifts exchanged by both owner-managers and employees. Using the Maussian approach to the gift, as well as the literature on innovation in SMEs, a case study was conducted within an SME. The results show that the logic of the gift is characterized by an implicit request made by the manager, by gifts naturally exchanged between the two parties, and by counter-gifts not returned by the manager, a source of frustration and disengagement.
