Abstract

Much research on innovation has concentrated on those sectors engaged in developing new technology or in the early growth phase of development. In contrast, this study is concerned with organizational characteristics which affect innovativeness in a mature industry. It is based on warp knitting which is a sub-sector of textiles. The first part set out to rank the firms concerned in terms of their innovativeness. Following on from this, the second phase showed that innovativeness was most closely associated with characteristics related to the firmś business strategy and how well this was known and understood by members of the firm. Other characteristics which were associated, though less closely, with innovativeness were the way the firm was managed and the degree to which individuals experienced freedom to use their own initiative. The implications of the study for practising managers are discussed.
