Abstract
European regions today stand before new challenges brought on by economic downturn, new and increasing competition, and suburbanisation processes. Despite the decreasing hindrance of geographical barriers due to improved mobility and communications, the regional entity is gaining a new dimension: it is becoming the negotiating platform for cooperation. Only the spaces that recognise the opportunities presented by cooperation will turn out successful. Such cooperation can be understood either as formal or composed of informal complements to existing instruments. The association “Economic Space Southern Bavaria: Munich, Augsburg, Ingolstadt (MAI)” has made the marketing of the region both at home and abroad a priority. As such, it is taking up a responsibility that cannot be acted upon by the formal institutions and authorities. The cooperation in MAI produces a positive and innovative climate, which is a prerequisite for the increasingly important endogenous development.
