Abstract
The aim of this research was to evaluate over a 12 month period the introduction of self initiated and self directed study contracting with student nurses. A literature search found no reference to study contracting with basic nursing students during the decade 1976–1986. The participants included students at the start of their first year and groups of second and third year students. The potential significance of independent contracted study is related to androgogical teaching and learning philosophy. The main findings of the study are discussed. The method of research employed was of a qualitative nature utilising triangulation of data and the identification and analysis of KEY events. A fuller account of this research was originally submitted in part fulfilment for bachelor of education honours award.
