Abstract

AbstractNerve fibers and varicosities were localized with histochemical techniques in the tunica adventitia of human penile blood vessels. At the light microscopic level, these nerves were either adrenergic or acetylcholinesterase (AChE)‐positive. With the electron microscope, adrenergic, cholinergic, and possible peptidergic varicosities were found in these pen vascular nerves. The physiological effect of such a varied innervation of the penile vasculature in the processes of erection and detumescence and recent data on these processes are discussed.
