Abstract
For pt.II see ibid., vol.14, p.2635, 1981. A systematic analysis of experimental data on the alignment of the L3 vacancy in light atoms formed in collisions with fast ions has been made. Two vacancy production mechanisms were considered: direct Coulomb ionisation and electron capture. The first Born approximation and the Oppenheimer-Brinkman-Kramers approximation, both employing realistic atomic wavefunctions, were used for the calculation of the alignment due to direct ionisation and electron capture, respectively. The results of the calculations are in good agreement with experimental data.
