Abstract

The absorption spectra of silver atoms isolated in Ar, Kr, and Xe matrices have been measured in the wavelength region below 190 nm. From our spectra, we can assign all multiplets belonging to the 4d105s → 4d95s5p transition and, in argon, even the strongest members of the 4d105s → 4d95s6p transition. Matrix shifts and crystal field splittings are discussed in comparison to the results for the resonance transition 5s → 5p. The influence of the matrix on the various atomic levels is discussed in a simple picture assuming that the average radius of the wave function for the excited electron is the dominant parameter for the interaction.
