Abstract

Can anything queer and female “come out” in the Black community? This article will examine the concept of “queer” and offer a critical reflection of queer women’s realities within the Black church and Black community. Specifically addressing the “loves other women sexually” definition of womanism, this article will discuss what it means to be Black, female, and queer from a first-person perspective. It will explore why womanist theology, which espouses a respect for women who love other women, provides an excellent framework for doing queer theology for African American women and will also address the oft-rhetorically asked question, What can a Black woman “do” for another woman, sexually?
