This study was a 10-year review of all patients who presented to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Emergency Department after submersion. Charts were reviewed for data regarding clinical features and circumstances related to the submersion event in order to investigate the relationship between submersion injuries and the presence of other traumatic injuries. One hundred and forty-three patients were identified. The median age was 5.6 years (range 1.2 months to 18.7 years). Two-thirds were male. Seventy percent of submersion events occurred in pools while 19% occurred in bathtubs and 11% occurred in natural bodies of water. Circumstances of the submersion were unavailable in 36% of cases, 31% were related to the child’s inability to swim, 14% were infants left unattended...
