Abstract
We characterize unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra in terms of their injective resolutions. A module of type n is an unstable module admitting an injective resolution whose first n + 1 terms are reduced injective. The class of modules of type 2 contains the Dickson algebras and various rings of invariants.
