Abstract

Patterns of the initiation sites produced by shock waves in samples of a plastic-bonded HMX explosive, Composition B, and nitromethane are presented. The shock amplitudes in the explosives are less than 6 kbar, and effective durations vary from about 20 to 80 μsec. A qualitative initiation model that provides an explanation for the patterns is given. An experimental system for studying the effects of low-amplitude show waves on explosives or other materials is described.
