Abstract

Adolescents are compelled by several influences to take risks. Among these risks is the possible early onset of sexual intercourse. Numerous factors are known to be correlated with early onset of sexual activity, but this information is not used systematically in programs to prevent teenage pregnancy. The physician must provide information about sexual health that is appropriate for adolescents whether or not they are sexually active. Sexual abstinence is an option for avoiding teenage pregnancy, but adolescents must have a clear understanding of what abstinence entails.
