Abstract

Since the very first conceptualization of clearance of toxins by means of dialysis more than a century ago, maintenance dialysis has become a life-sustaining routine treatment, without which more than a million people throughout the world with limited or no kidney function would quickly die.1 Despite the remarkable increase in the widespread application of maintenance dialysis, there has been a noticeable lack of progress in the science and technology that underlies this life-saving treatment as well as medical management for best patient outcomes.
