Abstract
The activity of eukaryotic initiation factor-2 (eIF-2), a polypeptide chain initiation factor, which forms a ternary complex with the eukaryotic initiator methionyl-tRNA (Met-tRNAi) and GTP and which promotes the binding of Met-tRNAi to the 40Sribosomal subunit, increases several fold in developing barley embryos during the late stages of embryogenesis. The maximum increase took place during the desiccation phase and, as a result, dry embryos contain a very large amount of eIF-2 activity. This activity decreases and reaches a level that sustains protein synthesis during germination of the embryos.
