Abstract

We propose a criterion of the initiation and propagation of a crack near a stress concentrator. This criterion is based on the combined application of the deformation and energy approaches to the analysis of fracture of materials. This enables one to determine both the ultimate load and the region of crack growth (initiation). Solutions of the problem are obtained for mode I, mode II, and mode III cracks.
