Abstract

This work presents a method to initialize and resize spacecraft formations using a combination of global and local optimization techniques. The method presented uses a two-step process. First, using genetic algorithms, we search for the best subset of target states such that the total formation initialization delta-V using a two-burn Lambert solution is minimized based on mission specific constraints. Second, we use Lawden's primer vector theory to find the optimal number and location of maneuvers to achieve the desired formation.
