Abstract

For language learners, in order to accomplish reading tasks with good results, they are required to own a comparatively adequate number of vocabulary including cultural words. Reading tasks in EFL textbooks are a must to finish for students. As far as the study is concerned, the authors are going to investigate 39 tertiary students’ initial understanding of cultural words’ meanings in severalEFL textbooks (a case study). The cultural words are taken from reading passages in the books based on theories of cultural words and their classification. Findings showed that students initially comprehended the meaning of this special type of words in some EFL textbooks. However, they still found it troublesome to figure out the semantic features of idiomatic expressions or collocationsutilized by native speakers. By the end of the research, pedagogical implications in language teaching and learning are going to be proposed in detail.
