Abstract

The early stage of solidification of 18-8 stainless steel droplets on substrates was studied. A temperature-measuring system has been developed to trace the thermal history of the droplet surface. Factors influencing the degree of undercooling at the surface were investigated, the resulting microstructures and phase selection being affected by the degree of undercooling. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions using a recent model of rapid dendritic growth.
