Abstract

The brick structure of the 16th-century catacombs located in Suprasl (N-E Poland), which naturally collapsed at the end of the 20th century, was excavated in 2012–2013. The unprotected structure was exposed to the aggressive factors of the atmospheric environment for approximately ten years, which resulted in further degradation of the historic substance. A temporary wooden covering has been made over the preserved fragment of the catacombs. The assessment of the destruction stage began with non-destructive tests, which did not require the consent of the heritage conservator. As a result of the works, requirements regarding: the method of temporary and permanent protection; the scope of further research; the possibility of reconstruction; the method and scope of renovation; and the possibility of using historical elements for the designed function were formulated. In order to determine the method of permanent protection and prevent further destruction processes, it will be necessary to perform comprehensive archaeological, architectural, structural and pathomorphological research. The work was summarized with an indication of the concept of recovering the remains of the catacombs to be visited by tourists. The possibility of performing religious ceremonies inside the catacombs with the participation of the faithful was considered.
