Abstract

Hatching of wolf fish eggs under artificial conditions was dependent upon a continuous supply of clean (not sterile) oxygen-rich sea water. Eggs older than 700 degree-days could be induced to hatch by applying mechanical stress. During embryonic development egg lipid level decreased gradually, but the proportions of fatty acids and amino acids remained relatively unchanged. The fatty acids were dominated by 16:0, 18:1 and the ω3 PUFAs 20:5 and 22:6. The fry were fed three different start-feeds: cod ( Gadus morhua L.) roe diet, Acartia longiremis, or Metridia longa. The cod roe diet did not support growth of the fry beyond 50 days, but fry fed natural zooplankton continued to grow beyond 120 days.
