Bacterial meningitis is a severe infection involving the meninges, which surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. The infection leads to a significant host response and inflammation in this area. Potential consequences of this disease include hearing loss, seizures, hydrocephalus, permanent neurological deficits, coma, or death. Timely and effective therapy to treat meningitis is integral to the success of therapy and the prevention of neurological sequalae.
