Abstract

2Preparedness for mass casualty incidents has taken on a new prominence in the United States since the events of September 11th, 2001. Large numbers of pediatric victims are possible in the future, which could overwhelm traditional triage systems in most hospitals. To help prepare the emergency physician for such a disaster, this article briefly outlines an organized approach to mass casualty incidents. Two triage algorithms, one for general disasters, and one for nuclear, biological, and chemical events, are discussed. Decontamination triage is also discussed. Finally, personal observations from the World Trade Center attacks and one hospital's experience are discussed.
