Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The TGFβ growth factor family has long been known to play a role in ovarian development and folliculogenesis. The critical role of the signal transduction family of SMADs is beginning to be explicated. The activating Smad, Smad3 regulates follicle growth and FSH receptor expression. Yet little is known about the ovarian role of Smad7, a direct regulator of Smad3 in many tissues. These studies investigate the expression of of Smad7 and the activation of a Smad7 promoter reporter construct.
