Abstract

Two types of capsules of Bacteroides intermedius were examined by the chemiluminescens procedure for their ability to inhibit phagocytosis by polymorphonuclear leukocyte. Whereas strain I-7, the strain having amorphous capsule, was readily phagocytized, strain I-4, the strain possessing fibrous capsule, was resistant to phagocytosis. Polysaccharide consisting of galactose and mannose in a ratio of I-7 was purified from strain I-4, but only crude outer membrane fraction was obtained from strain I-7. The capsular polysaccharide of strain I-4 inhibited phagocytosis of both rabbit red blood cells and IgG-conjugated beads, while the crude capsular fraction of strain I-7 did not.
