Abstract

The inhibition of host cell RNA synthesis in HeLa and L cells following infection with Mengovirus is shown to be qualitatively different. A rapid inhibition is observed in L cells while host cell RNA synthesis continues until late in infection in HeLa cells. Measurement of the rate of inhibition of host cell protein synthesis in infected cells in the presence or absence of actinomycin suggest that messenger RNA synthesis is suppressed in L cells and continues in HeLa cells. The synthesis of cellular RNA during suppression of protein synthesis with Actidione shows no similarity to the effect of virus.
