Abstract

The biological activity of a cell wall-derived xyloglucan nonasaccharide (XG9) was investigated using a bioassay with entire pea epicotyls (Pisum sativum cv. Progress). The xyloglucan fragment was found to inhibit gibberellic acid-induced elongation of etiolated pea epicotyls with maximum inhibition at concentrations ranging from 10 -11 to 10 -9 M. Growth of etiolated epicotyls in the absence of exogenously applied GA 3 was also inhibited by XG9 in the same concentration range
