Abstract

The effects of intraduodenal injections of 5 and 10 percent amino acid solutions and comparable solutions without amino acids was studied in unanesthetized turkeys. To observe and record pressure changes occurring in the GI tract, open-tipped tubes connected to pressure transducers were inserted into the glandular and muscular stomachs per os and into the proximal duodenum via a fistula. Intraduodenal injections were made via a second fistula into the distal duodenum. Gastric and duodenal motilities were significantly depressed within about 20–25 seconds after intraduodenal injection of 10 ml. of 10 percent and 15 ml. of 5 percent amino acid solution. No significant depression resulted from injections of 5 ml. of 10 percent amino acid solution, 5 or 10 ml. of 5 percent amino acid solution, or equal volumes of NaCl solution with pH and osmolarity equal to that of each of the amino acid solutions. Thus, an amino acid induced enterogastric reflex exists in turkeys as in mammals. This has not been previously demonstrated.
