Abstract
ATP and reductant for nitrogen fixation are produced in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. The condensation of acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate by citrate synthase (EC 4.1.3.7) is the first step of the TCA cycle. Citrate synthase occurs in two forms, a large (240–290 kDa) enzyme in Gram negative bacteria and a smaller (90–100 kDa) enzyme in Gram positive bacteria and eukaryotes.
