Abstract
1. 1. Homogenates of unfertilized eggs of sea urchins and some subcellular fractions from them inhibit the ciliary movement of sea urchin embryos. 2. 2. Inhibition by the homogenate of sea urchin eggs is specific to the ciliary movement of various sea urchin and sand dollar embryos but not to the ciliary movement in other animals tested. 3. 3. The inhibitory factor in the homogenate is thermostable, nondialyzable, acid-extractable, alkali-precipitable and trypsin digestible. 4. 4. These findings together with the other observations seem to suggest that the egg factor inhibiting the ciliary movement in sea urchin embryos may be related to a basic protein or a polypeptide.
