Abstract

The effect of aqueous extract of some trees cultivated in arid regions against the corrosion of carbon steel in alkaline medium simulating the interstitial solution of concrete contaminated with chlorides was investigated using various analytical and electrochemical techniques. Mott-Schottky analysis shows the formation of a passive layer on the metallic surface. EIS results suggest an increase in the corrosion resistance of carbon steel in the presence of plants extract comparatively to the blank systems. Furthermore SEM and EDS analyses corroborate these results. This important inhibition behaviour can be related to differential phenols richness in these plants (HPLC chromatogram).
