Abstract

Inheritance of resistance to Kabatiella zeae Narita & Y. Hiratsuka in maize (Zea mays L.) was studied in four crosses involving two resistant (R) and three susceptible (S) inbred lines, as follows. WF9(S) ✕ C123(R), W64A (S) ✕ Oh43 (R), Oh43(R) ✕) C123(R), and W64A (S) ✕ W117 (S). The inbreds, F1's, F2's, and backcrosses of F1's both inbred parents of each cross were evaluated by artificial inoculation in the field. The segregation observed suggested that resistance is partially dominant and qualitatively inherited. Estimates of minimum number of genes involved in the inheritance of reaction in the S ✕ R crosses gave values close to two. Broad‐sense heritability estimates for the S ✕ R crosses were approximately 75%. The reactions of the two resistant inbreds and behavior of various generations in crosses involving them indicate that C123 contains modifiers not present in Oh43.
