Abstract
A permethrin-resistant strain of soybean looper, Pseudoplusta includens (Walker), was developed from collections in Lousiana. After 9 generations of selection, this strain was 93-fold resistant and was crossed to a susceptible strain. Data from reciprocal crosses (R ? x S ?, S ? x R ?) indicated no sex-linked or maternal effects on resistance. Resistance appeared to be a codominant trait. Standard chi-square analysis of data from backcross to the susceptible strain suggested resistance was conferred by >1 gene ; this conclusion was supported by bioassays done with the synergist piperonyl butoxide, which is diagnostic for metabolic resistance. Implications for resistance management are discussed.
