INHERITANCE OF HARELIP

Abstract

To the Editor: —InThe Journal, April 4, page 1169, appears the statement that harelip is not an inherited characteristic. Butcher and Hutchinson have reported cases of heredity of the deformity. Peron in his doctoral thesis presented before the Faculty of Medicine of Paris in 1929 discussed the frequency of congenital harelip and cleft palate and stated that the deformity is rarely an inherited characteristic, although there are certain instances in which the role played by inheritance cannot be denied.
