Abstract

By defining the intensity of a lower and an upper threshold concentration, a model was developed to correlate odor intensity with odor concentration measurements. The odor intensity measurement in the model consisted of determining a sample’s odor concentration, making serial subsamples of the sample with different odor concentrations, and ranking the subsamples in order of odor intensity. Odorous samples emitted from the same source should have the same lower and upper intensity threshold concentration, which can be stored as standardized data. To acquire a sample’s odor intensity, only the odor concentration measurement is required. An experiment was conducted to verify this model in a laboratory trial scale.
