Abstract
Van Vleck's treatment of the Jahn-Teller effect in inorganic octahedral complexes having E g electronic states has been modified by the inclusion of additional quadratic terms. This procedure introduces a new constant, β, in terms of which the stereochemical behavior of d n , ( n = 1, 4, 6, 9), complexes may be understood. It is found that this constant is best viewed as a phenomenological parameter. The theory developed is used to amplify the discussion of the paramagentic resonance spectrum of copper fluosilicate hexahydrate given by Abragam and Pryce; to explain and predict certain asymmetries in the visible absorption bands of Ti (III), Cr (II), and Co (III), octahedral complexes; and to understand the observed distortions of octahedral Cu (II) and Mn (III) complexes.
