Abstract
Inhaled steroids are useful drugs that target the underlying mechanisms of asthma. Longterm studies are awaited to determine if they alter the natural course of asthma, or even provide a ‘cure’. Currently available formulations have similar clinical effects, but those with a low systemic bioavailability and high clinical to systemic effect ratio may have a role in reducing side effects. However, there is little evidence that important side effects occur at conventional doses of inhaled steroids.
