Abstract

Amidst a host of global problems, people living in western societies are confronted by collective narcissism—societies marked by fierce individualism and unyielding selfishness aligned with systems of global corporatism. As depressing as this appears, is it possible that our current trends of narcissism might contain a transformative possibility? Instead of ignoring our collective narcissism, it is important to identify and work with it as a means of transforming it. Pulling from themes within ecopsychology, political psychology, philosophy, and transformative studies, the author delves into narcissism, collective narcissism, and its relationship to primary yearnings for wholeness and collective transformation.
