Abstract

Manhattan is a stunning, hand-woven hanging with a motif inspired by the modern cityscape of New York City. It was designed in 1953 by the Swedish textile artist and designer Ingrid Dessau (née Peterson, 1923–2000) and woven by weavers associated with the Kristianstad County Handicraft Society. Dessau’s long and successful career took off in the 1950s, and her work would come to be characterized by a capacity, founded on a solid mastery of her craft, to renew both the applied arts and industrial production of textiles in Sweden. In the case of Manhattan, this is exemplified by a synthesis of tradition and modernity that surprised and excited her contemporaries.
