Abstract

The article dwells upon linguistic interpretation of one of the main classes of anthroponyms – personal names that function in common usage of the Ukrainian in Odessa. The purpose of the suggested research is to analyze the infrequently used masculine names from the point of view of their public evaluation, not real names are studied, but those that people like. This is a new approach to the study of anthroponyms. The factors that influence on the attitude to the names of modern Ukrainians of different ages are analyzed. To achieve this goal, we solve the following main tasks: 1) to identify the quantitative and qualitative composition of modern anthroponymic preferences of respondents of different ages; 2) to analyze the names in the social aspect as a category of sociohistorical and cultural, as well as to carry out their statistic-linguistic analysis. The object of the research is modern anthroponimistic preferences. The subject of study is infrequent masculine names as a part of modern anthroponymic preferences of Ukrainians. The source of factual material was the results of the sociolinguistic practice of students of the philological faculty of Odessa I. I. Mechnikov National University. To solve the problems posed in the research, complex methodological techniques are used: 1) descriptive in combination with the widely used quantity-qualitative interpretation of the material; 2) the method of chronological cuts. The basis of the work is a survey. As a result of the study of the questionnaires, it was found out that the respondents collectively named 200 masculine names that we identified as being of little use, among which the old church and calendar names are dominated and their folk-colloquial variants; new anthroponyms with expressively foreign coloring are presented to a lesser extent. Thus, the formation of modern anthroponimistic preferences is influenced by tradition and fashion. Such results make it possible to predict the future dynamics of real use of names.
