Abstract

SmMnO 3 infrared transmission in the 2000–8000 cm−1 range was studied as a function of temperature. We observed several infrared-active Sm3+ crystal field transitions between the lowest H65/2 ground-state level and the H69/2, H611/2, H613/2, and H615/2 excited levels. The splitting of the ground-state Kramers doublet of the Sm3+ ion below TN∼60 K varies from 3.8 up to 5.8 cm−1 at 2 K. This reflects strengthenings of the Mn3+–Mn3+ and Mn3+–Sm3+ magnetic interactions. In order to monitor the antiferromagnetic transition, the frequency softening of the most intense Raman-active B2g stretching mode (∼607 cm−1) below TN was also measured.
