Abstract

In this study, we focused on methods to improve the handling and the processing of cervical scrapings for FT-IR spectroscopy. More specifically, emphasis was placed on the chemical preservation of cervical scrapings, and on the acquisition of spectra with disposable IR-transparent filters. Studies showed that there were no demonstrable differences in the spectra of chemically preserved cervical scrapings, and cervical scrapings that were stored in liquid nitrogen. No differences in the spectra were also noted when BaF2 windows were replaced with disposable IR-transparent filters. The clinical applications of FT-IR spectroscopy can be greatly enhanced with the aid of chemical preservatives, and disposable IR-transparent filters.
