Abstract

The IR absorption spectrum of hydroxysulfonyl (HOSO 2) radical, an intermediate of atmospheric oxidation of SO 2, has been obtained in argon matrix at 11 K in the reaction of SO 2 and OH prepared by the photolysis of H 2O 2 or H 2O during deposition. The observed vibrational frequencies are 3539.9, 1309.2, 1097.3 and 759.5 cm −1. The IR absorption bands Of H 18OSO 2 were also obtained by using H 2 18O as a hydroxyl radical source.
