Abstract
With the increase in automatic control of water-treatment processes there is at present a need for on-stream instruments to measure the concentration of particles in slurries. The present work suggests the use of a sensor based on transmission and back-scattering of infrared light enabling to measure in situ the suspended concentration of solids at any point inside the suspension. The sensor consists of a high-output infrared emitter, a high-power sensors for transmitted and another one for back-scattered light, one low-noise amplifier, a power source, and a recorder and display device for the signal. The contribution of this work is not found in the technique used but rather in its design and practical application. The experimental work has been carried out with activated-sludge slurries. As the study has been focused on secondary settlers of the activated-sludge waste-water processes, measurements were performed at depths between 0 and 4.5 meters.
