Abstract

This paper presents calculations of the infrared radiation resulting from the upper atmosphere being excited by a very high altitude nuclear explosion. The mechanism considered is that of X-ray absorption to form a layer of hot air leading to the formation of NO molecules and the subsequent radiation at the fundamental at 5·4 microns and the first overtone at 2·7 μ.
