Hackwell, J. A. ; Schweizer, F. Abstract J, H, and K IR maps, U, B, and I photographs, and photoelectric UBVRiJHK measurements, are presented for 15 areas in the central part of NGC 1566. Although the IR bar shown by the H (1.6 micron) map is invisible in the UV and only slightly visible in the blue, it is found to produce azimuthal brightness variations (of up to + or - 25% around the mean level) in H which may reflect similar variations in the surface mass density. The exceptionally red color of the bar approximately matches that of an empirical galaxy of M(V) = about -20. The strong spiral pattern also seen in H is presumably related to the presence of the IR bar.
