Abstract

We discuss in this paper the optimization of the principal parameters for a helium cooled bolometer designed for a given experiment and particularly when the optical background from the warm optics is important. Optimal values of diameter, thermal conductivity between the detector element and the cryostat, time constant, and helium bath temperature are studied. Simple formula for the calculation of photon noise are given. The ultimate performances possible in the present state of art for the three-part bolometer are reviewed in the different cases and compared to the theoretical limits.
