Abstract

A dramatic reduction in infrared fluorescence quantum yield with increasing molecular size is observed for directly excited first CH stretch overtones in a series of C 1–C 4 hydrocarbons. Ethane and larger molecules (ϱ v1b ⩾ 15 states cm −1) appear to undergo rapid intramolecular relaxation within the 1 μs detector risetime.
