Abstract

Infrared-excited visible luminescence has been observed in several oxidic lattices doped with Yb 3+ and Er 3+. The infrared-to-visible conversion efficiency and the emission colour were found to be strongly dependent on the surroundings of the rare earth ions. In all cases the conversion efficiency was appreciably lower than the values reported for some Yb 3+, Er 3+-doped fluoride lattices. The influence of the host lattice on the conversion efficiency and emission colour is discussed in relation to chemical bonding properties.
