Abstract

The infrared spectrum arising from the formation of molecular hydrogen in molecular clouds is calculated for three different possible mechanisms. The contribution to the spectrum arising from the excitation of molecular hydrogen by cosmic ray secondary electrons is included. Specific emission lines that may serve as diagnostics of the formation mechanism are identified.
