Abstract

The diquinoline metal (II) tetracyanonickelate complexes, Ni(C 9H 7N) 2Ni(CN) 4 and Cd(C 9H 7N) 2Ni(CN) 4 have been prepared for the first time and their infrared and Raman spectra are reported. The structure of the complexes consists of two dimensional polymeric sheets formed from Ni(CN) 4 ions bridged by M(C 9H 7N) 2 cations (where M-Ni or Cd). The quinoline molecules lie above and below the sheets. Several modes of the coordinated quinoline have upward shifts in frequency compared to those in the free molecule, and the shifts are metal dependent. These are thought to be due to the coupling of the internal modes of the quinoline with the M - N vibrations.
